Featured Program - Wright State University

Wright State
The Wright State University (Dayton, OH) Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa was chartered in the spring of 2004. With advising support from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the new inductees envisioned the creation of what would become the organization's signature event; the annual Leader2Leader conference planned for emerging and seasoned student leaders throughout the university community. Since Wright State's OΔK members are among the busiest leaders on the campus,  it was decided soon after the organization's founding that the membership would focus its energy on the development and presentation of one major program per year that would be offered in the middle of spring term.

New members, who are inducted in early November, understand that their commitment to the WSU Circle includes active participation in managing and administering all aspects of the program's planning and execution.

Prior to departing for an extended fall-to-winter break, the co-presidents hold an initial meeting to determine conference committee assignments. Real work begins in earnest during winter term, and includes several committees:program, publicity and promotions, logistics, evaluation, and budget.

To make the conference experience accessible to as many as 120 students, members submit a detailed proposal to the Special Funding Committee of Student Government for partial support. The Office of the VP for Student Affairs supports the honorarium for the keynote, or primary conference presenter. (WSU's Circle also received a Clay Grant to assist with the 2006 conference.)

Break-out sessions have included a wide range of topics and formats, including the following:
  • Making a Web Site Work for Your Organization
  • Organizational Fund Raising
  • Communicating to Lead
  • Student Philanthropy
  • Student Organization Collaboration
Most sessions are presented by OΔK students, but have also included faculty and staff inductees. Participants receive a binder that includes copies of all presentation hand-outs, and a catered lunch. Because the Circle is always looking for ways to identify potential members for the coming year, a display table with OΔK information and samples of past Leader2Leader Conference materials placed by the registration area.

WSU's Circle is advised by Kathy Morris, Associate VP for Student Affairs (Faculty Secretary), and Gary Dickstein, Assistant VP for Student Affairs and Director of Student Judicial Services (Faculty Advisor). Dan Abrahamowicz, VP for Student Affairs, has been a strong supporter of the Circle, and also attends all OΔK functions.
