Charity House at Embry-Riddle, (February 26-27, 2010)
Charity House is Omicron Delta Kappa (Leadership Honors Organization)'s way of increasing Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's (ERAU) awareness of the problem of homelessness. It was surprising to me to learn that there are about 3000 homeless people in just the local Daytona Beach area. Participants are fed a BBQ dinner, pizza, and light breakfast with donations from sponsors. All proceeds are donated to the STAR Family Center, Homeless Assistance Corporation. During Charity House, student organizations get together to build a cardboard village on the west lawn and sleep outside under the stars. Houses are judged on creativity, structural integrity, appearance, and use of materials. Teams are only allowed to use cardboard, duct tape, and water based [spray] paints. Competitions and games are held to promote teamwork within each organization. We host guitar hero, poker, relay races, cardboard engineering challenges, and more! The biggest prizes include $150 for 1st place overall, $100 for 2nd place overall, and $50 for third place overall. Increase campus awareness about homelessness and promote teamwork within participating organizations. The project also helps project a good image of ERAU to the community. All proceeds are donated to the STAR Family Center, Homeless Assistance Corporation.
