Beginning in 2013, when then National President Mike Christakis (Alfred University, 1998) started the practice, our Society has tried to predict the winner of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship by using our own special O∆K methodology:
• If one team’s school has a circle and the other school’s team does not, the school with the circle is projected to win.
• If both teams are at institutions with circles, the circle with the earlier founding date is projected to win.
• If neither team is at a school with a circle, the higher seed is projected to win.
According to O∆K Bracketology 2023, the Men’s Final Four should come down to:
Alabama (1924) versus Kentucky (1925) and Pitt (1916) versus Arizona State (1980) – with Pitt beating Alabama in the championship game.
We also created a bracket to predict the winner of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. After using the same methodology, the Women’s Final Four should come down to:
Maryland (1927) versus Georgia (1935) and Louisiana State (1933) versus Alabama (1924) – with Alabama beating Maryland in the final game. However, given that Dawn Staley (a 2017 initiate of the Chi Circle) and her University of South Carolina Gamecocks are 32-0 at the start of the tournament, we think her team might make the Final Four.
Our methodology for the men’s tournament actually worked once – in 2013. That year, it predicted that Louisville would win the national championship.
