University of Akron

About the Circle

The Theta Circle at The University of Akron was established in 1922, making it the 8th oldest circle in the nation. The Theta Circle has a rich legacy. Many influential Theta Circle members have buildings on campus named after them; for example, Dominic Guzetta (past president), Harry Schrank (past Board of Trustees member), and Dr. Mark Auburn (past Provost). Other influential Theta Circle members in the community and on campus include Sandra Pianalto (member, J.M. Smucker Board of Directors), Dr. Dale Mugler (prior Dean, Honors College) and current president, Dr. Scott Scarborough.

As of Spring 2015, there are about 30 active members in our Circle. We are always looking for more of today’s leaders who want to get involved in our Circle, especially students and faculty who are involved in the following aspects of campus life:

• Athletics
• Campus/Community Service, Social/Religious Activities, and Campus Government
• Creative and Performing Arts
• Journalism, Speech and Mass Media
• Scholarship

Applications are open to students with at least 60 credits (juniors) and greater than a 3.00 cumulative GPA. We send emails at the beginning of fall and spring semester to students who meet these criteria. Meeting times usually vary each semester, but we try to make sure that everybody can be a part of this great honorary fraternity. Come join the Theta Circle family this semester!

University New President Reception- In fall of 2014, our circle held a reception for the University of Akron’s incoming president, Dr. Scott Scarborough. This program was open to all honors groups and societies on campus as a meet and greet to get to know our new president.

LIFE Awards- The University of Akron hosts the LIFE Awards each year to honor students for various achievements throughout the university. Many organizations across the university sponsor awards by reading applications and selecting winners, along with providing a token for the winner. Our circle sponsors the Outstanding Sophomore Award and the ODK Rupert Latture Memorial Award, which is awarded to an individual for starting up a thriving and successful new student organization.

Our circle is working towards adding more programs to become a more prominent feature on the University of Akron’s service-focused campus!
