William Caulfield Raftery was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma, all-around athlete, and social leader on campus at the time of O∆K’s founding in 1914.
After completing his studies at Washington and Lee University, he eventually became the 17th head football coach at Virginia Military Institute (VMI). He coached there for ten seasons (1927-36) and had a record of 38-55-5.
Once he completed his coaching career, he moved to Ashland, Virginia, and entered the pharmaceutical and insurance businesses. He passed away in 1965 and is buried in Lexington, Virginia.
