Leadership often begins with a single step outside of one’s comfort zone. For Ashlyn O. O’Neill (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 2023), that step was applying to Omicron Delta Kappa at Virginia Tech—a decision she made on a whim, never expecting the profound impact it would have on her life.
When her circle was still in its early stages of growth, Ashlyn was encouraged by a friend to step up and take on a leadership role. Though initially unsure if she had the time or experience, she soon realized her ability to influence OΔK in a positive way.
Now, with a diverse and dynamic leadership team, Ashlyn is proud of the progress her circle has made and excited about the future. Her story is a testament to the power of taking chances, embracing leadership, and building a strong community—all values at the heart of OΔK.

“I never thought of myself as a leader but when I got to college, I knew I needed to do something to change that. I actually applied to O∆K on a whim, never thinking of it as something that could potentially have such a big impact on my life as it does/will continue to do. As our circle at Virginia Tech is still growing, I was asked by a good friend of mine if I would be willing to step up and help lead the group. I had already gotten myself involved in many things in college and wasn’t sure if I would have the time necessary. But after saying yes, and being added to all the different communication channels, I know I had the capabilities to help influence O∆K in a positive way. We now have such a great diverse team at VT and will continue to grow.”
