Bringing Clarity to Uncertain Conditions
The Omicron Delta Kappa Society and Educational Foundation Board of Trustees have named Mike Seidel (Salisbury State College) as the recipient of the 2026 Pillar of Leadership in Communications award. This honor recognizes members who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in communications and exemplify the highest ideals of Omicron Delta Kappa—scholarship, service, integrity, character, and fellowship.
The award was presented on June 13, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia, by Jennifer L. Waller, Ph.D., O∆K president and chief executive officer. Seidel was initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa while attending Salisbury State College, where he studied mathematics and geography before earning a master’s degree in meteorology from Penn State University.
For more than four decades, Seidel has been one of the most recognizable and trusted voices in broadcast meteorology. From his early career at WYFF in South Carolina to his work with The Weather Channel and now Fox Weather, he has helped millions of Americans understand and prepare for severe weather events.
Over his 43-year career, Seidel has reported from 46 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and locations across Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, and Cuba. He has covered some of the most significant weather events in recent history, including Hurricanes Katrina, Harvey, Irma, Ian, and Irene, as well as tornado outbreaks, winter storms, and nor’easters. His expertise has also extended to major sporting events, including the World Series, Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Indianapolis 500, and PGA Tour events.
Known for his calm and steady presence during weather emergencies, Seidel has consistently transformed complex meteorological science into information that people can understand and use. His reporting has helped communities make informed decisions, prepare for dangerous conditions, and prioritize safety when it matters most.
“Omicron Delta Kappa is honored to recognize Mike Seidel for his contributions to communications and public service,” Waller said. “For four decades, Mike has demonstrated exceptional leadership by helping communities understand and respond to severe weather. His commitment to scientific excellence, public safety, and compassionate communication embodies the values of O∆K and the spirit of this award.”
Throughout his career, Seidel has demonstrated that effective communication is about more than delivering information—it is about building trust. His dedication to accuracy, professionalism, and public service has made him a respected leader in meteorology and a reassuring presence during times of uncertainty.
A pioneer in weather broadcasting and a champion of public education, Seidel exemplifies the values at the heart of Omicron Delta Kappa. His lifelong commitment to communication, leadership, and service makes him a fitting recipient of the Pillar of Leadership in Communications award.
