Planning and organizing and arranging… and changing those original plans. The trials and tribulations of pulling together the logistical details for a once in a lifetime event: OΔK’s centennial celebration.
It’s easy to lose sight of just how historic the centennial convention will be for OΔK. Those in attendance will hear from renowned speakers, meet members and alumni from across the country and discover (or rediscover) our society’s history and our future.
Those of us who gather in Lexington likely won’t fully realize our place in OΔK’s history. Fifty years from now, one hundred years from now, when our successors gather to celebrate another OΔK milestone and look back at the artifacts from next month’s centennial celebration – the centennial history book, photographs, program books – that’s when they’ll reflect on “who” took part in that historic celebration in 2014.
Some of us may be around to celebrate our sesquicentennial in 2064 (yes, 2064!). Barring some groundbreaking medical discovery, none of us will celebrate OΔK’s bicentennial in 2114.
So is our centennial historic? You bet. Is it a once in a lifetime experience? Absolutely! Will those of us who gather in Lexington in a little less than two weeks fully understand our place in history? Probably not, but those who come after us surely will.
