Leadership often comes when we least expect it. For Kyle L. Dortch (East Carolina University, 2021), that moment arrived not through a traditional path but through a surprising invitation that would change the course of his academic and professional journey.
While teaching music in Alamance County, North Carolina, Kyle decided to pursue his master’s degree in music education at East Carolina University. After a few strong semesters, he received an unexpected email recommending him for membership in Omicron Delta Kappa. Though joining O∆K was not something he had originally planned, Kyle embraced the opportunity—and soon discovered how deeply it aligned with his passion for leadership and service.
Once initiated, Kyle immediately stepped into an officer role as head of Distance Education, working closely with fellow officers to ensure that online students felt engaged and supported. His commitment didn’t stop after graduation. Instead, Kyle expanded his involvement nationally, serving on the NLC planning committee, the programming committee, and the DEI committee. He has also presented at two National Leadership Conferences, promoted the Stone Ethical Leadership Challenge, and supported several circles across North Carolina.
Kyle’s journey shows how leadership can begin in unexpected ways and grow into a lifelong commitment to service and community. His advice to new members? Invest fully in the experience—you’ll get out of O∆K what you put into it.
We invite you to read Kyle’s leadership story in his own words:
“I did not come into Omicron Delta Kappa in a typical way, for sure. I was teaching music in Alamance County, North Carolina, and wanted to go back for my master’s in music education. I started attending East Carolina University in 2020 and had a great few semesters. The next thing I knew, I received an email from the Omicron Delta Kappa circle at ECU recommending my membership. I joined in 2021 and immediately took an officer position as the head of Distance Education. I worked closely with the officers to see that our online students were well engaged and supported. After graduating, I still wanted to give back to O∆K, so I joined the NLC planning committee, the programming committee, and the DEI committee. Since that time, I have presented at two NLC conferences, worked to spread the word on the Stone Ethical Leadership Challenge, and supported several circles in NC. I recommend that everyone who joins O∆K put in what they want to get out, especially if you are lucky enough to start in your undergraduate years!”
